Binga stakeholders engage in participatory scenario planning training

Stakeholders in Binga recently participated in a two-day participatory scenario planning training focused on climate change. The training was organized by the government of Zimbabwe, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the British embassy.

The initiative aimed to develop a hybrid forecast for the 2024/2025 rainy season in Binga District, in light of the Meteorological Service Department’s announcement regarding anticipated rainfall patterns. These patterns are predicted to include below-normal, normal, and above-normal rainfall, with potential risks of floods and cyclones impacting the region.

The training sought to bridge the gap between traditional indigenous knowledge and scientific meteorological forecasts. Attendees included representatives from various government departments, such as the Office of the District Development Coordinator and Agritex, highlighting the collaborative nature of this initiative. Traditional healers, pastors, and prophets also contributed valuable insights into weather patterns based on historical experiences and cultural practices. The goal was to integrate this indigenous knowledge with scientific data from the Meteorological Service Department to create a comprehensive and accurate seasonal forecast.

By producing a hybrid forecast, the training aimed to empower communities and local governments to make informed decisions regarding climate-resilient livelihoods. This approach emphasizes the importance of understanding and managing climatic risks, as well as promoting disaster risk management within local government planning processes.

One notable contribution came from Hughes Mudenda, a traditional healer from Siabuwa Ward 2, who predicted rainfall on November 27 and 28, 2024. While this forecast differed from the information provided by the Meteorological Service Department, it was documented as part of the ongoing effort to create a robust hybrid forecast.

Prophet Gaiteny Moyo stated on 14 October 2024 that they utilized spiritual forecasts to predict this year’s rainy season. He mentioned that the Holy Spirit revealed to them that the season would experience several disasters, including violent winds and storms capable of tearing off roofs from houses. Additionally, he warned that schools could also be severely affected by these storms.

Prophet Moyo further noted that just last week, a resident in Sinamunsanga Ward 1 was struck by lightning, highlighting the dangers associated with the impending weather conditions. He emphasized the importance of preparedness and community awareness in the face of such forecasts.

In light of these predictions, the community is encouraged to take proactive measures to safeguard their homes and schools, ensuring they are equipped to handle the potential impacts of severe weather. This call to action underscores the need for collaboration between spiritual leaders and local authorities to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience in the region.

Following group discussions focused on rainfall indicators, participants presented a hybrid forecast for the Binga 2024/2025 rainy season. The findings revealed slight discrepancies between the indigenous forecasts and the scientific predictions, underscoring the value of combining diverse knowledge systems to enhance climate resilience.

The participatory scenario planning training in Binga represents a significant step toward fostering climate resilience in the region. By integrating traditional knowledge with scientific forecasts, stakeholders are better equipped to address the impacts of climate change, manage risks, and develop sustainable livelihoods that can withstand the challenges posed by an increasingly unpredictable climate. This collaborative approach not only enriches local planning processes but also empowers communities to adapt to the realities of climate change.
