Nkayi demands training centre for children with disabilities

Residents of Nkayi in Matabeleland North Province called for the establishment of a vocational training center dedicated to children with disabilities. The demand arose during a Persons with Disabilities Bill hearing held at Agape Hall this week.

Community members participating in the hearing emphasized the importance of such a facility. “It would help capacitate persons with disabilities in the area,” said resident Simon Moyo.

Another resident, Thandiwe Ndlovu, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for the center to provide children with disabilities with “crucial skills and knowledge to lead fulfilling and independent lives. Some of these children are not even attending school. Therefore, they need to be equipped with skills for a productive life, but that can only be done in a proper place designated for that purpose.”

The hearing also heard from John Moyo, who stressed the economic empowerment opportunities such a center could bring. “Equipping disabled youth with vocational skills will not only empower them but also contribute to the economic development of our community,” he said.

Human rights defender Effie Ncube challenged the government to ensure that education staff members in special schools are trained on handling different disability groups. “Children with disabilities need to be kept motivated to stay in schools,” he argued. “The lack of qualified staff fuels disinterest in learning facilities, especially for disabled minors.”

The call for a vocational training center reflects a growing recognition of the need to empower disabled children in Nkayi and ensure they have the tools they need to reach their full potential.
