Kezi women poised for economic independence

MATOBO – A group of women in Kezi, Matobo District are well on course to economically emancipate themselves through the formation of a small viable business, with potential to grow exponentially.
According to the group’s Spokesperson, Minenhle Maphosa, the women contribute about 10 usd each per month. They then use the money to buy ingredients and prepare a wide range of foodstuffs for sale to locals as well as group members. Part of the profit accrued on the sales is then used to purchase basic commodities for the sustenance of the women’s families and livestock such as goats.
The group whose main thrust is to economically empower women and alleviate poverty, consists of twenty dedicated members who are aged between 22 and 76.
Ward 14 Councillor, Sinikiwe Moyo weighed in on the women’s initiative and encouraged other women in her area of jurisdiction to emulate the good example set by this group so as it realize financial independence. She castigated the dependency syndrome and overreliance of some women on men and called on women to assist in taking care of their families
“It is now an outdated habit for women to look up to men as sole breadwinners. Times have changed and women must complement their husbands’ efforts to put food on the table,” she said.
