Bulawayo residents association raises concerns over proposed budget

The Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) has expressed deep concern over the Bulawayo City Council’s (BCC) proposed budget for 2025.

Despite the BCC claiming it’s a standstill budget, the proposed special water and roads levies are set to increase the financial burden on residents.

According to BPRA, the special water levy of $1 USD per household and the special roads levy of $1 USD per household will significantly impact residents already struggling with economic hardships.

Additionally, the removal of free water will further exacerbate the financial strain on residents.”While the BCC claims this is a standstill budget, it’s far from the reality for residents,” said a BPRA spokesperson. “The proposed levies and the removal of free water will directly impact our pockets, making it even more difficult to afford basic necessities.”

The association has also raised concerns about the BCC’s track record in safeguarding funds. “There is no confidence that the BCC will utilize these funds effectively to address the water and infrastructure challenges,” the spokesperson added.

The BPRA has urged the BCC to reconsider its proposed budget and prioritize the needs of residents. They have called on the council to provide adequate services, improve financial transparency, and ensure that residents are not burdened with unnecessary costs.
