Binga community benefits from eye screening initiative

The Binga community recently benefited from a two-day free community eye screening initiative conducted at Kwik Mart supermarket in Binga Growth Point and at the main hospital.
In commemoration of World Sight Day 2025, which occurs every second Thursday of October, the Council for the Blind Binga, in partnership with Binga District Hospital under the Ministry of Health, rolled out an eye screening initiative to benefit the local community.
Many residents took advantage of the free service, which included eye screening, checks for eye diseases or conditions, eye education, guidance on eye care, treatment of eye conditions, testing for spectacles, and bookings for surgeries and appointments with ophthalmologists.
Admire Mwinde, a resident of Sinakooma Ward 5, expressed appreciation for the program, suggesting it be extended to all wards to benefit those unable to travel to the hospital due to financial constraints.
“It may also help communities gain knowledge on how to care for their eyes,” he said.
Jane Ngwenya, a beneficiary, thanked the program, highlighting its accessibility at the supermarket, where people from different areas could get tested while shopping.
The initiative aligned with this year’s World Sight Day theme, “Love Your Eyes,” which focuses on accessible, available, and affordable eye care for all.
Mrs. Siamukonde, Refractionist under the Council for the Blind, encouraged residents to get their eyes tested, share their eye health journeys, and practice good eye care.
“We’re always available at Binga District Hospital OPD, providing eye care that’s accessible, available, and affordable,” she said.
The free community eye screening program was a resounding success, with many residents benefiting from the services and gaining valuable knowledge on eye care. Initiatives like these underscore the importance of accessible healthcare and highlight the Council for the Blind and Binga District Hospital’s commitment to promoting eye health in the community.
