Barbourfields senior citizen transforms illegal dumping site into vibrant garden

A senior citizen from Ntabazinduna flats in Bulawayo has demonstrated exceptional community spirit by converting a former illegal dumping site into a garden, showcasing his commitment to promoting a clean and healthy environment.

The garden owned by Mr Ncube popularly known as ‘Sa Bongani’ in the community is a testament to creative repurposing, embodying the adage, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.

The garden is crafted from discarded materials like rub, asbestos, bird nests, old drums, and it is designed with castle lite beer bottles, pipes and a small room made out of reeds.

Mr Ncube revealed, that the project kept him up at night, as he grappled to find a viable solution for developing the surrounding area without compromising the precious space.

“I started this project bit by bit thinking on how to perfectly develop this place which had turned into an eyesore. Most of the times I would work throughout the night instead of during the day.”

“I would sometimes make it a car wash, and one thing for sure people can come anytime and relax, bond with nature also since the place is quiet. Those passing from their farm fields can also utilize the place and rest before proceeding to their homes.”

“My aim was to plant trees but I eventually came up with a different idea. I channeled some of my funds to boys who provided labor in clearing the area, as this was hard to do alone, imagine a large heap of garbage,” said Mr Ncube.

The illegal dumping site, located near the National Railways of Zimbabwe workshop, had become an eyesore, accumulating trash that was discarded at night, in contravention of regulations prohibiting dumping at undesignated areas.

Ward 2 Councillor, Rendani Moyo, commended the senior citizen for his remarkable efforts in promoting a healthy and smart environment, praising his significant contribution to the community.

“I want to applaud and appreciate the efforts of the resident that has gone out of his way to be a steward of the environment. We all have a part to play by avoiding illegal dumping and ensuring that we deposit litter in appropriate receptacles,” said Cllr Moyo.

Illegal dumping sites pose a significant threat to human health, increasing the risk of contracting diseases like cholera, typhoid, and malaria. They also contribute to air pollution, exacerbating respiratory related illnesses and other health problems.

In recent years, the city council has implemented stringent penalties for individuals caught dumping waste in undesignated areas. Despite these measures, the problem persists, largely due because most dumping incidents occur under the cover of darkness.
