ZRP issues warning against political violence

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to members of the public urging them to desist from politically motivated violence ahead of the 2023 August elections.
A statement dated 29 July 2023 signed by National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police will intensify measures against pepertrators of violence.
“ZRP reiterates that there is no going back in fighting political violence as the country braces for 2023 harmonized elections to b held on 23 August 2023, the police warns individuals and groups engaging in any form of political violence or issuing threats to commit violence or damage property, that they would be arrested without fear or favour irrespective of one’s political affiliations or status.”
Nyathi revealed that police reaction teams which are meant to ensure law and order is maintained in the country, have been set up. He encouraged the public to report all forms of violence.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any form of political violence which include threats, intimidation , damage to property or assault at any nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk on telephone (0242 ) 703631 or whatsApp on 0712800197.”
Over the years, elections in Zimbabwe have been characterised by political violence which has resulted in murder in some cases.
