Tshisanyamas’ fueling climate change

The sprouting of Tshisanyamas in different parts of Matebeleland has been identified as one of the drivers of climate change caused by cutting down of trees to source firewood and charcoal.
This was said by agricultural specialist Mkhumbuzi Siziba whilst speaking to Skyz Metro during the Ilihlo Lemaphandleni show on Thursday.
“Of late we are seeing the sprouting of tshisanyamas in the region and these are using charcoal and ukwanda kwawo kutsho ukusetshenziswa kwamalahle, kutsho ukusetshenziswa kwenkuni. You then ask yourself ukuthi lezo zihlahla eziganyuliweyo ukhona yini okewewenza ieffort yokubisela lezo zihlahla noma kuganyulwa nje.
Ma kusenziwa amalahle lawa esiwabiza ngokuthi yi charcoal kutshiswa izihlahla eziphilayo hayi siyatshiswa ukuze sikhuphe amalahle amahle alomfutho kutshiywe izihlahla ezifileyo ngoba zingeke zikhiphe amalahle alomfutho ofunekayo so ma amatshisanyama esesanda endaweni kutsho ukuthi izihlahla ezinengi eziphilayo zisengozini,” he said.
Siziba emphasised that the cutting down of trees is not the only impact of the charcoal making process as he explained that the smoke also influences climate change, making the process a chain of events that affect the environment.
Siziba also highlighted that interfering with the environmental setup also fuels human-wildlife conflict as it leaves the wild animals with no options but to search for more safer spaces and in the process they invade homes and interfer with human structures.
Ilihlo Lemaphandleni is a show that airs on Skyz Metro FM every Thursday between 1-2 pm which seeks to tackle issues affecting Matebeleland rural areas.
