Tsholotsho’s San community strained by drought, wildlife conflict

The San Community in Xhani- Xhani, located in ward 2 under the leadership of Chief Tategulu in Tsholotsho, is grappling with a severe crisis stemming from the compounded effects of drought and escalating human-wildlife conflict. In recent weeks, the community has faced increasing encounters with hyenas, leading to devastating losses of livestock and posing a significant threat to their livelihoods.

Davy Ndlovu, a member of the community who fell victim to the relentless attacks of hyenas, shared his harrowing experience, recounting how his cattle were viciously targeted and left with severe injuries. “One of them was severely bitten on the breasts by these predators, leaving it in agonizing pain. I had no choice but to end its suffering,” Ndlovu lamented, highlighting the heartbreaking reality faced by many in the community.

Ward 2 Councillor Sehlile Mathema resonated with Ndlovu’s concerns, emphasizing the urgent need for decisive action to address the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the area. “We cannot stand idly by as these hyenas continue to wreak havoc on our community’s livelihoods. Immediate measures must be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents,” Councillor Mathema remarked, underscoring the urgent need for interventions to mitigate the impacts of these conflicts.

Reached for comment, ZimParks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said he was not aware of any recent hyena attacks in the area. As the San Community in ward 2 Xhani-Xhani grapples with the devastating consequences of drought and the looming threat of human-wildlife conflict, stakeholders at both local and regional levels are called upon to collaborate and implement sustainable solutions to safeguard the community’s well-being and protect their precious resources.
