Police in Matabeleland South are appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of an unknown driver who killed a Mawabeni man in a hit and run incident yesterday morning.
According to Zimbabwe Rupublic Police Matebeleland South provincial spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena, the deceased, who has been identified as Thabani Mpofu (45) was on his way to the area’s irrigation scheme site when he met his unfortunate fate.
“In the wee hours of Sunday approximately around 0500 hours at the 61 km peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge road, the pedestrian was hit while crossing the road to irrigation site in Mawabeni. The driver fled the scene leaving the lifeless Mpofu on the spot.”
The matter was reported to police who took the body of the deceased to Esigodini mortuary for post mortem.
“We urge motorists to exercise maximum caution to avoid road carnage and most importantly motorists must desist from trying to escape crime scenes when they commit crimes but should exercise humanity and try to take measures that will give victims access to health care,” said Inspector Mangena.
