Kasambabezi Marathon 7th edition shines in Binga District

Binga District recently hosted the highly anticipated 7th edition of the Kasambabezi Marathon, attracting athletes from across Africa and a crowd eager to witness the event.

This year’s marathon not only showcased athletic prowess but also highlighted the rich cultural and tourism potential of Binga. The marathon was held under the theme, “Running for a Sustainable Future: Uniting for Nature Conservation and Climate Resilience.”

The marathon weekend was a vibrant celebration, featuring not only the main running events but also a variety of sports competitions, including snooker, soccer games, chess, and tug of war. This diverse array of activities created a thrilling atmosphere filled with competitive spirit for both participants and spectators.

The local business community experienced significant benefits, with many vendors reporting impressive sales during the event. This economic boost underscored the marathon’s role in promoting local commerce.

Honourable Chief Siansali graced the event as the guest of honour, participating in the 10km run. In his address, he emphasized the importance of seizing economic opportunities while encouraging attendees to explore the unique culture of Binga.

“I urge the business community to grab the opportunity to make money and also learn about the rich culture in Binga,” he stated, highlighting the interconnectedness of sports, tourism, and local culture.

The Kasambabezi Marathon serves as a gateway for tourists to experience Binga’s rich heritage, particularly the unique culture of the baTonga people. As visitors flock to the district, they are treated to breathtaking landscapes and a chance to engage with local traditions, making the marathon a catalyst for cultural exchange.

Mr. Tinashe Mudekwe, the secretary general of the Kasambabezi Marathon, expressed his excitement about the event’s growth.

“This event is growing each year, and it is impressive. I promise a bigger and better event in 2026,” he announced, hinting at future enhancements that will further elevate the marathon’s profile.

This year’s event saw participation from athletes as far away as Kenya and other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. Local athlete Mr. Persist Phiri, who competed in the 10km race, shared his enthusiasm.

“I am happy that this event is growing bigger and it has put Binga on a greater level, not only in sports but also in raising awareness about Binga.”

Mr. Ronald Siamwamwata the District Sports Officer for Binga said, it was a great success. We introduced new sport codes, such Chess and Cycling. We had more participants compared to last year, well supported. We’re humbled by the unwavering support of stakeholders, partners and the community at large, Siamwamwata said.

The 7th edition of the Kasambabezi Marathon was not just a sporting event; it was a celebration of community, culture, and economic opportunity. As Binga continues to position itself on the map through such initiatives, the future looks bright for both the marathon and the district’s tourism potential. With each passing year, the event not only promotes athletic excellence but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage of Binga.
