A 37 year old female Member of Parliament from Ntabazinduna, Elizabeth Masuku has been appointed to the Pan African Parliament (PAP).

Masuku is an MP under the ruling party women’s quota for Matabeleland North.

In an exclusive with Community Podium, Masuku said she is ready to serve and and deliver at continental level.

“I would like to appreciate the Government of Zimbabwe for this opportunity because it shows that it is serious with  empowering women. I was hit by the big surprise appointment as I least expected this acknowledgment.

This also proves Government’s growing faith  in women representing the country  in regional spaces.  I appreciate  the confidence  they have in me especially  as a woman in politics. As women in politics, we are relegated and downtrodden but this is a paradigm  shift in  understanding leadership  in the country.

As I assume this task, there is  need for me to tap into  matters of period poverty and women empowerment  because coming from rural home in Matabeleland, I am well versed with  issues that resonate with communities in this jurisdiction,” she said.

Masuku joined politics  more than a decade ago, and on 10 August 2014 she was elected Zanu-PF Youth League National Secretary for Education. On 16 December 2017, she was elected Zanu-PF Youth League National Secretary for Transport and Welfare.

Masuku started off as a district chair in Umguza before before rising to be  Secretary for Information in Matabeleland North Youth League.

She was elevated to vice chair in the provincial youth league before becoming national Secretary for Education and Secretary for Transport still in the Youth League.

She has been a Zanu PF Central Committee member for two terms.

In 2018, Masuku was elected into Parliament through the Youth Quota and this year, she was elected  into Parliament through the Women’s Quota.
