Gwanda Pirates unlocks youth potential through football

Gwanda Pirates has called for trials, opening its doors to local youths and providing them with a unique opportunity for them to join the team and participate in the league. This initiative is testament to the team’s commitment to nurturing youth empowerment and promoting community pride through football.

Systematic counselor Emelta Mawere praised the team’s community impact, stating that Gwanda Pirates’ influence has brought about positive transformation in the lives of local youths.

“The alarming rise in drug abuse among youths in communities has sparked concern but participation in sports offers a beacon of hope as a positive alternative for vulnerable young people, through regular physical activity.”

“The inclusion of local youths into the team can also enhance overall well being, build positive relationships, and provide a sense of belonging, thereby reducing the allure of drugs and empowering youths to make healthier lifestyle choices,” said Ms Mawere.

Gwanda Pirates achieved an unprecedented feat by clinching the Zifa Matabeleland South Division Two League title in their debut season, leaving an indelible mark on the league’s history despite their brief existence.

Speaking during an interview Gwanda Pirates coach Yorum Ngwira revealed that the team’s identity is rooted within the community culture which encourage local youths to participate and promote youth development and talent identification.

“We want to recognize local youth, by doing this our team will have an identity of Gwanda in particular. Gwanda is very big and there is vast talent here. My cry is to have a voice to say our identity is from Gwanda.”

“We are looking forward to better things as a team. From our team that played last season, a few won’t be joining us, but we are trying to strengthen the team other new boys,” said Coach Ngwira.

Gwanda Pirates is posed to become a magnetic force drawing visitors to the area which is expected to significantly boost local business, creating a ripple effect of development as the team has a staggering social media following of over 10 000 fans.

Local youth empowerment through sport plays a pivotal role towards improving self esteem and confidence, opening opportunities for scholarships and other networking opportunities among other.

Soccer legend Mayfield Daka hailed the inclusion of Gwanda Pirates, predicting that it will inject stiff competition and raise the standard of football in the region.

“More teams in the division one league means growth of football in the community and already there are mine teams around, so they will bring competition and pave way for quality football and the region will produce quality players,” said Mr Daka.

Gwanda Pirates is a shining example of hope for local youths, with also a girls team that actively promotes positivity and discourages destructive behaviors, offering a supportive environment for young people to thrive.

The region has a rich sporting history, having produced outstanding talent from grassroots level who have gone on to excel in national teams. Legendary figures such as Jerry Sibanda, Mkhuphali Masuku, and Pule Sibanda, among others, have made significant contributions to the country’s sporting landscape.
