Over 1 200 participants expected at Binga Kasambabezi Marathon

More than 1 200 people are expected to descend on Binga for the ninth edition of the Binga Kasambabezi Marathon (BKM) on Saturday, as the event continues to attract participants from different parts of the country.

In an interview, BKM Chairperson Recent “Ringo” Ncube said the majority of participants have opted for the fun run, which is being used to combine sport with tourism. He said participants will have an opportunity to explore Binga’s attractions, including the sand beach, crocodile farm, hot springs and the district’s cultural heritage.

“We are using the marathon for sports tourism, so most of the people are opting for the fun run so that they can come and have a look at what Binga has to offer,” Ncube said.

The growing number of visitors has also boosted demand for accommodation, with Ncube saying most lodges in the district are almost fully booked ahead of the event.

“For the first time we have the race packs in place and ready for distribution, and most lodges are almost 99.99 percent fully booked,” he said.

The marathon will be preceded by a Culture Day 24 hours earlier, giving participants and visitors an opportunity to experience Binga’s traditional culture.

“The event will offer participants more than just running, with activities such as chess, cycling and draughts also lined up. Visitors will also be able to enjoy drinks and a braai at the beach,” said Ncube.

According to Ncube, NSSA, ZIMRA and Moonlight are among organisations confirmed to participate in the event.

He said the strong turnout is positioning the marathon as a platform where participants can combine sport with tourism, entertainment and cultural experiences in Binga.
