Fear Grips Bubi District as Elephants Threaten Livelihoods

Residents of Wards 5 and 8 in Bubi District are grappling with renewed fear as elephants have returned to their communities, causing widespread crop destruction and raising concerns about food security in a year already marred by drought.

This alarming situation came to light during Community Podium”s radio show “Ilihlo Lemaphandleni” which recently aired on Skyz Metro FM. Callers expressed their anxieties, highlighting the devastating impact of the elephants’ return on their already precarious livelihoods.

“These elephants are causing immense damage,” said a participant who identified himself as Mhlanga. “After they enter our fields, they create pathways for cattle to follow, further destroying crops. Just two or three nights ago, they raided two farms and only left in the morning, heading towards Ward 5. With the poor rains this season, if the elephants continue, they will wipe out the little we have left, pushing our communities deeper into hunger.”

Adding to the urgency, Agritex representative Dumisani Nyoni emphasized the need for immediate action. “In a dry year like this,” he stated, “wildlife incursions are more likely. Local authorities must prioritize the revival and effectiveness of the Problem Animal Control Unit (PACU) in collaboration with Zimparks. This collaboration ensures swift response, especially in areas with problematic animals. We urge villagers to report such incidents promptly to avoid resorting to self-help measures, which can have fatal consequences for both humans and animals. Nyoni further stressed the importance of supporting communities through the drought.

Speaking to Community Podium, Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed their awareness of the situation and their commitment to addressing it. “We have received numerous reports about this challenge,” he said, “and we are taking the necessary steps to mitigate the danger. We appreciate the information we receive, as it plays a crucial role in resolving human-wildlife conflicts. We encourage all communities facing similar challenges to come forward,”he said.
