Dete celebrates 15th anniversary of fun run

The Dete community commemorated the 15th anniversary of the Jane Bubear Fun Run on Saturday, April 6th, 2024. The 10km race, known as the John Bubear Sports Foundation (JBSF) Dete 10km Fun Run, has become a beloved tradition, fostering community spirit and promoting healthy lifestyles.
The JBSF Dete 10km Fun Run began in 2009 with less than 100 participants. Over the years, it has grown significantly, attracting over 1,000 runners, including 700 adults and 300 children, in this year’s edition. The race honors the legacy of the late Jane Bubear, a passionate sports advocate who generously supported charitable athletic endeavours. Traditionally, all participants receive a commemorative Jane Bubear T-shirt. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was unfortunately put on hold for several years.
The tireless efforts of Martin and Hilary Winter, who serve as trustees, have been instrumental in the race’s organization. Initially, the event was held at St. Francis Xavier Primary School, with former sports directors Raphael Tembo and Innocent Phiri playing key roles. Since 2011, a dedicated race committee has overseen the organization, including prominent figures like Ndodana Masuku (Rhino Cup Champions League CEO), P. Mathe (former Detema Secondary School head), and D.J. Nyathi (Rhino Cup Champions League President).
This year, the JBSF partnered with Painted Dog Conservation, an organization already managing the local football league, replacing the African Bush Camps Foundation as the local implementing partner. The race caters to all ages and abilities, with volunteer marshals ensuring a safe and smooth running experience. The event is further supported by numerous stakeholders, including ZRP Dete, the Forestry Commission, local schools, health officials, sports authorities, and conservation organizations.
Following the race, participants eagerly awaited the medal and prize presentations at Detema Secondary School. The top five finishers in each category were recognized with gold, silver, bronze, platinum, and copper medals. Martin Winter, visibly delighted by the enthusiastic turnout, remarked, “I am very happy to see you all participating in the event. Jane Bubear’s spirit lives on!” Veterans like Michael Lunga echoed this sentiment, highlighting the race’s health benefits.
Adding to the excitement, two lucky participants, namely Khotso Mlilo and Tawananyasha Zende won bicycles. The highlight, however, was the grand prize won by Sharmaine Magadzire: a Brentford Football Club kit autographed by the entire team, including star striker Ivan Toney.
The event also served as a platform to encourage positive choices. Jessi Chiume, representing the Sports and Recreation Commission, urged the youth to channel their energy into sports and stay away from drugs. Similarly, David Kuvaoga, from Painted Dog Conservation, emphasized the importance of environmental conservation alongside athletic pursuits.
As the Dete community looks forward to next year’s race, a sense of satisfaction and renewed inspiration permeates the air. The Jane Bubear Fun Run continues to embody the spirit of its namesake, promoting sportsmanship, community unity, and a commitment to a healthy and sustainable future.
