New substantive chief for San Community
President Mnangagwa has appointed Christopher Dube as the substantive Chief Goledema for the San Community in Tsholotsho District, Matebeleland North.
A letter seen by this publication from the Permanent Secretary for Local Government and Public Works Felix Chikovo stated that “His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe has with effect from 10 November 2022, appointed Christopher Dube as substantive Chief Goledema in terms of section 283 (a) (i) and b of the Constitution of Zimbabwe as read with sections 3 (1) and (2) of the Traditional Leaders Act (29:17) in Tsholotsho District of Matabeleland North Province.”
“Kindly advise the encumberment, facilitate the payment of his allowances as well as arrange for his official installation” read the letter
Commenting on the development, Tsoro-o-otso San Development Trust Director, Davy Ndlovu, said “We are grateful for this gesture. This sounds like a form of independence. Matters affecting the Tjwa (San) are now in the hands of the newly elected Chief.”
The San Community is found in the periphery of Tsholotsho, western Zimbabwe. About 90 kilometres from Tsholotsho business centre lies Gulalikabili village, and about 60 kilometres to the east is Mtshini village. The villages are home to the Tshwa (Tjwa) people, known locally as the Khoisan or San community.
The Tjwa in Tsholotsho are one of the two indigenous tribes in Zimbabwe, the other one being Doma in the eastern parts of Zimbabwe.
