Burst water pipe brings relief to Magwegwe and Lobengula residents amidst scarcity

A burst water pipe has emerged as a sigh of relief to residents of Magwegwe and Old Lobengula who have been struggling with water scarcity as the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) grapples with water challenges. The pipe closer to Lobengula High, has become an impromptu water source for the nearby communities.
“The pipe brings relief; we are weary of the safety problems associated with this type of water source hence we try as much as possible to save the council provided water so that we can have safe water for drinking ,” said Sithabile Ncube, a Magwegwe resident. “It’s been weeks since we’ve had running water, so this is a blessing in disguise.”
Many residents have taken advantage of the situation which occured over two weeks ago, using the water to wash clothes, and clean their homes.
“We’re doing our laundry here now,” explained Nokuthula Sibanda, a Lobengula resident. “It’s better than going without water for days. We’re making the most of it. The kids are even playing in the water, it’s become a makeshift playground.”
Another resident, Mthokozisi Ncube, noted, “While it’s not ideal, the burst pipe has become a lifeline. We’re grateful for this unexpected solution. We just hope the authorities fix the pipe soon, but for now, it’s a welcome relief.”
The burst pipe has highlighted the community’s resilience amidst the ongoing water crisis. Residents have come together to share the resource, demonstrating the power of community spirit.
“This burst pipe has brought us together,” said Sibanda. “We’re looking out for each other, sharing buckets and water. It’s amazing how something so unexpected can bring such joy.”
The city council has been working to address the water scarcity issue, but residents remain concerned about the long-term solutions.
