Environmentalist advocates for shift to green fuels

Bulawayo environmentalist, Tonderai Shoko is urging people to switch to green fuels as a way to combat climate change and environmental degradation. This year, for Earth Day, Shoko took a different approach, focusing on promoting green fuels rather than his usual clean-up activities.
“Let’s all appreciate that we share the Earth with other species whose habitats are heavily affected by our behaviour,” Shoko said. Shoko is the founder of the five-year-old ‘Keep Bulawayo Clean’ campaign, which organizes clean-up activities in the city.
Methembe Ncube, a young Bulawayo resident, highlighted the importance of Earth Day in raising awareness about environmental issues.
“Commemorating Earth Day is important as it helps to raise awareness about environmental issues like climate change, pollution as well as deforestation. Earth Day is a chance to connect with others who care about the environment,” she said.
The Matobo Youth Development Initiative (MYDI) also joined the call for action. MYDI Director, Descent Dube, emphasized the need for renewable energy and habitat preservation.
“We are reminded of the Earth’s incredible beauty and fragility on World Earth Day. We must take action to protect it, not just for ourselves, but for all the species that call it home,” Dube said in a statement.
Efforts to reach the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for a comment were fruitless as spokesperson Amkela Sidange’s phone was unreachable.
