Moyo elected Vic Falls mayor

Victoria Falls City Ward 7 councillor Prince Thuso Moyo has been elected the city’s new mayor, following last week’s skirmishes around the mayoral election.

Moyo will be deputised by Ward 3 councillor Lungile Nyoni. 

The mayor and his deputy  were elected unopposed.

Last week, the election had to be deferred after residents reportedly got wind that plans were afoot to have Ward 1 councillor Ephias Mambume installed as mayor. Mambume was said to be the party leadership’s choice for mayor. Residents opposed Mambume’s elevation on grounds that he was not “local enough.”

After caucusing with the CCC Matabeleland North chairman, Prince Dubeko Sibanda and other senior party figures in the city, the nine elected and two women’s quota councillors reconvened to vote for the duo as mayor and deputy.

Mayor Moyo and his deputy were first elected councillors in 2018. Deputy Mayor Nyoni is CCC’s youth chair in Hwange district.
