10th Parly opens tomorrow
The First Session of the Tenth Parliament of Zimbabwe will be officially opened on October 3, as per President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s announcement last week.
“Now, therefore, under and by virtue of the powers vested in me as aforesaid, I do, by this my Proclamation, fix the New Parliament Building, Mt Hampden, as the place in which the first session of the Tenth Parliament of Zimbabwe shall be held; (b) 12 o’clock noon on Tuesday, the 3rd October, 2023, as the time and date on which the first session of the Tenth Parliament shall begin,” read the Government Gazette released on Tuesday last week.
Under the Constitution, the President is expected to summon Parliament to meet within 30 days of assuming office and he has done so through Proclamation Number 7 of 2023.
The 10th Parliament has in the National Assembly 176 MPs from Zanu PF and 103 from CCC. The 280th seat be filled by Gutu West after its by-election slated for with the by-election for Gutu West for November 11th.
33 senators from Zanu PF, 27 from CCC, 18 senator chiefs and two senators representing people with disabilities, make up the Senate.
Mnangagwa was declared winner of the August 23 presidential elections having garnered 52.6% of the vote and his rival, Nelson Chamisa having secured 44% of votes according to results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec).
However, the opposition CCC has rejected both the electoral process and result even though its winning Members of Parliament and Councillors were sworn in and have taken up their positions.
