Villagers in Lupane struggle as flooded rivers isolate communities

Lupane, Zimbabwe —Villagers from Zikungwa in Sotani ward, Lupane, are facing significant difficulties as the Mbembesi and Gwayi rivers have flooded, isolating them from essential services and daily necessities. As a result, children living across the Gwayi River are unable to reach their schools, leading to serious disruptions in both primary and secondary education.

“We used to cross the river every day to go to school, but now it’s impossible,” lamented 12-year-old Thandeka Moyo, a Grade 6 student. “I miss my friends and my lessons. Sometimes we just sit at home because the water is too high.”

The situation is similarly dire for the community’s access to healthcare. The only clinic available is located at Lupane Centre, but the flooded rivers have made it nearly impossible for villagers to seek medical assistance. “If someone falls sick, we can’t get them to the clinic in time,” said 45-year-old village elder, Mrs. Siphiwe Ndlovu. “We feel trapped and helpless.”

Local Member of Parliament Mxolisi Sibanda has acknowledged the plight of the villagers and is taking steps to address the issue. “I will be engaging the Ministry of Transport to propose a linking bridge that would allow our community access to vital services,” Sibanda stated. “This is not just about infrastructure; it’s about the health and education of our children.”

The villagers are hopeful for a swift resolution. “We need this bridge to be built as soon as possible,” said Mr. Tinashe Khumalo, a community leader. “Our children’s future depends on their education, and our health is at risk without access to medical care.”

As the rains continue, the urgency for a sustainable solution becomes more pressing. The Zikungwa community is calling on local authorities to prioritize their needs, hoping that the proposed bridge will soon transform their isolated reality into one of connection and opportunity.
