Victoria Falls community embraces solar power to combat deforestation

In a bold move to reduce land degradation and deforestation, residents of Jambezi in Victoria Falls have embarked on a massive drive to acquire and utilize solar-powered equipment for cooking and lighting.

Renia Nyoni from Bethsida BH 8 highlighted the community’s collective resolve, saying,

“As a community, we have seen it fit to encourage each other to invest in solar systems, conserving our forests in the process. The majority of people here rely on firewood for energy, leading to widespread deforestation. We’re saying, let’s harness technology and save our ecosystems,” she said.

Thabani Ncube from Mazhanga area echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need to break away from traditional practices.

“For generations, our ancestors have used forests for firewood. It’s our duty to utilize ecosystems sustainably by embracing solar power. Let’s give our vegetation a break,” he added.

The community’s efforts have yielded tangible results, with numerous homes in Jambezi now equipped with solar systems for various uses.

Acting Headman of Nemananga Ward, Freedom Chabwa, expressed his delight at the development.

“It’s pleasing to note that my subjects are heeding calls to mitigate climate change by shunning tree felling. I urge communities under my jurisdiction to adopt solar systems, reducing the tendency to cut down trees. Trees are vital to our environment. Our boreholes are also solar-powered, it has become a truly encouraging trend,” he noted.

Environmental specialist and climate change researcher, Pride Ncube, praised the community’s initiative.

“I’m impressed that Jambezi residents are embracing solar power, alleviating deforestation’s devastating impact. If this trend continues, we may witness reduced climate change severity in this region. I urge other rural communities to emulate Jambezi’s stance,” he shared.

By adopting solar power, Jambezi residents are harnessing a cleaner, more affordable energy source, poised to reduce land degradation and pollution.
