Tragedy strikes as 3 minors drown

Three minors from Mvundlana suburb in Tsholotsho drowned in Gwayi river while swimming.
According to the local councillor Soka Ngwenya, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the three minors had initially gone fishing and then decided to dive into the river for a swim.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident.
“On 27/01/21, at about 14:00 hours, a team of 4 youngsters (names supplied) all of Mvundlana suburb in Tsholotsho went to Gwayi river for fishing. Ntobeko, Mandlenkosi and Methembe decided to swim. Methembe started drowning and screamed for help and Ntobeko tried to rescue the former but drowned in the process as well. Mandlenkosi decided to get out of the river but drowned before he could exit the river”, said inspector Banda.
Ncominkosi took their clothes and rushed home where he arrived at about 20:00 hours on the same day. He narrated the story to one of the deceased’s father, Mr. Mbonisi Dube.
Police Sub Aqua managed to retrieved the body of one victim while villagers retrieved the other two bodies.
“Our appeal as ZRP is that parents and guardians should monitor and look after their children so that they don’t go to rivers and water bodies. Members of the public are encouraged to abide by the prevailing COVID-19 regulations and should avoid unnecessary movement. Please note that Communities can liaise with our SUB AQUA section for training in swimming and water rescue in the event of drowning”, added Inspector Banda
