UNICEF urges action on safe water crisis in Zimbabwe

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is calling for intensive action to address the critical issue of water scarcity in Zimbabwe, exacerbated by the El Nino-induced drought.

UNICEF Representative Tariro Mavi, the Wash specialist, whilst addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, emphasized the vital role of access to safe water in ensuring children’s development and well-being.

“Access to safe water is a fundamental human right, essential for children’s health, nutrition, education, and protection,” she stated.

Zimbabwe’s drought has led to severe water scarcity, affecting millions of children. UNICEF stressed that without safe water, children cannot fully benefit from their rights and develop their full potential.

To address this crisis, UNICEF called on the government, donor community, and partners to prioritize interventions providing sustainable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities for children and their families.

“Increased funding will enable innovative approaches to build community resilience, mitigate climate-related shocks, and protect children’s well-being,” the UNICEF Representative urged.

Journalists were encouraged to promote this message widely, supporting UNICEF’s call for prioritizing water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions to respond to Zimbabwe’s drought emergency.
