Mthuli Ncube reminded to pay school fees
HARARE-The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has written to Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube asking him to honour governments promise to pay school fees for teachers’ children.
In response to a declaration of incapacity by teachers in February, the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) agreed to the payment of “ZW 20 000 maximum school fees for up to 3 biological children,” of a teaching family, among other benefits. However, the promise is yet to be fulfilled.
“It is sad to note that the benefits were supposed to be effective from 1 March, 2022 but the fruit of this initiative is yet to be celebrated…we are kindly making a request for funds for 141 000 teachers at $60 000 RTGS each,” said ARTUZ Secretary General, Robson Chere.
He revealed that the government had also made a U-turn on the promised $100 usd salary increment. “They changed the increment part to salary cushioning, meaning they can withdraw that component any time without consultation,” said Chere.
Zimbabwean teachers declared incapacitation at the beginning of the term to which the government responded with a raft of promises including the payment of school fees for their children.
