Flash floods hit Nkayi

Nkayi North residents are counting their losses in the wake of flash floods caused by incessant rains that pounded the area, destroying homes, schools, crops, and livestock last week.
Residents who spoke to Community Podium via the Ilihlo lemaphandleni radio show on Skyz Metro FM, painted a gloomy picture and are appealing for assistance from government as well as the public.
“The floods destroyed a lot of our belongings including livestock and grains. Some people have lost homes and we are calling for much needed assistance. At this point any kind of help will do,” said Nomsa Nyathi, a resident.

“…what is more painful is that the little we had left in the fields that we had hoped would sustain us for some time was also destroyed and hunger is already wreaking havoc in families.
We are also worried about our children as local schools such as Jabulisa were not spared by the floods. We implore the government to help rebuild our houses and schools,” said Hlupho Ndlovu.

According to Councillor Mbiba of Ward 3, about 30 households were affected. He said the affected residents were in urgent need of aid especially in form of food, clothing and blankets.
