Douglas Eland Vocational Technical College recently marked a significant milestone with its 7th graduation ceremony, showcasing its crucial role in the realm of tourism education. Drawing students from across the country, the institution has become a beacon of hope for aspiring professionals in the industry.
Founded in the year 2012 by visionary entrepreneur Douglas Mpofu, under the Adult Part-Time Continued Education program availed by the Ministry of Education, the institute offers courses biased to Tourism and Hospitality industry, training and equipping youths, school-leavers and individuals in general, with skills and expertise that make them potentially employable.
Douglas Mpofu established the college with a clear vision: to empower the local youth with specialized skills and expertise to thrive in the tourism industry. His commitment to bridging the gap between academic learning and industry needs has helped the local economy thrive by preparing skilled professionals.
Offering a range of programs designed in collaboration with industry leaders, Douglas Eland Vocational Technical College has consistently produced graduates with skills to thrive in the tourism industry. From food preparation, house-keeping, food and beverages, waitress, car maintenance to LPH for Safari Tour Guides, students are equipped with hands-on experience.
Duduzile Matshelela, a former graduate of the college who is now a Safari Guide, praised the college: “it’s a life-changing institution. We applaud Douglas Mpofu for transforming so many lives, not only in Dete, but throughout Zimbabwe.”
Tuso Mathe, another former graduate, a Safari guide echoed the same sentiments: “l am a testimony of that college, I have a professional career now, the college is also a great initiative that keeps youths away from illegal activities like drug abuse.”
Under the leadership of Douglas Mpofu, the college continues to evolve, embracing innovation and adapting to industry trends. His leadership ensures that the college remains at the forefront of educational excellence producing graduates that contribute meaningfully to their respective societies.
As the college celebrates its seventh graduation, it has long term plans to improve its curriculum and wish to add more tertiary courses like carpentry, electrical engineering, plumbing and bricklaying, but due to poor cash flow and limited resources at the moment that remains a dream yet to come true.
