Former Lupane Councillor, Japhet Mpofu, sentenced for goat theft

LUPANE – Japhet Mpofu, the former Councillor for Ward 14 (Menyezwa Village) of Kusile Rural District Council, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for the theft of a goat belonging to Sikhonzile Ndlovu of Mhlahlandlela village. The sentence was handed down by Lupane Magistrate Barbra Phiri.
In a ruling made yesterday, Mpofu received a 12-month prison term, with four months suspended on condition of good behavior and that he does commit a similar crime in five years. The remaining eight months were further suspended and will be served as 280 hours of community service at Shabula Primary School, starting next week.
The case unfolded when Mpofu was accused of stealing Ndlovu’s goat, an act that raised eyebrows in the community given his prior role as a public official. Villagers were quick to respond to the situation, leading to his apprehension.
During the trial, the prosecution emphasized the breach of trust involved in the crime, particularly given Mpofu’s status as a former elected representative. Magistrate Phiri criticized his actions, noting that public figures are expected to uphold a higher standard of conduct.
“This behavior is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of public office,” she stated during sentencing. “You have a responsibility to set an example for your community.”
The sentencing has sparked conversations among residents about the importance of integrity in leadership. Many villagers expressed relief that justice was served, while also hoping that such incidents would encourage greater accountability among public officials.
As Mpofu prepares to fulfill his community service requirement, the Lupane community remains vigilant, advocating for ethical leadership and trust in local governance.
