Govt lifts ban on kombis

The Government has permitted private commuter omnibus operators to resume operations upon satisfying given conditionalities.

As part of Covid-19 measures at the onset of the lockdown, kombis were banned thereby according monopoly status to the state run ZUPCO.

Kombi operators are required to register with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development as well as demonstrate strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines before they can resume operations.

While addressing the media in a post Cabinet briefing, the Minister of Defence and War Veteran Affairs Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri who also doubles up as chairperson of the Ad hoc Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19 said kombis must be regularised prior to starting operations. She warned that unroadworthy kombis will not be accommodated.

The Minister intimated that the decision was taken in light of the declining covid-19 cases.

“Originally, every private operator who wanted to operate had to register with ZUPCO but we realised that ZUPCO also has some challenges”
