Sunshine Cinema equips Lupane students, residents to fight fake news

In an effort to address the rising challenge of information disorders, Sunshine Cinema, a local media organization, has conducted a series of workshops targeting students at Lupane State University and residents of the Lupane community.

The project, led by Sunshine Cinema Ambassador, Zibusiso Moyo, aims to equip participants with essential fact-checking skills and critical thinking abilities to navigate the complex information landscape. “We embarked on this project as we have observed a concerning rise in misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation,” said Moyo. “Our goal is to empower the students and community members with the tools they need to identify and combat the spread of false information.”

Reason Moyo, a student at Lupane State University, shared his experience with the Sunshine Cinema project, stating, “Engaging with the Sunshine Cinema project on misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation has been a valuable learning experience. It has helped me develop essential skills in fact-checking and critical thinking, enabling me to approach information with a healthy dose of skepticism, scrutinize sources, and verify facts through cross-checking and evidence evaluation.”
Moyo further explained how the workshops have equipped him with the ability to recognize patterns and tactics used to spread false information. “Through this exposure, I’ve honed my ability to identify biases, logical fallacies, and manipulative language. I’ve also stayed up-to-date with the latest fact-checking resources and methodologies, which has made me proficient in debunking misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. I’m confident in my ability to navigate the complex information landscape and promote fact-based discourse and critical thinking in all aspects of communication.”

The workshops have also garnered positive feedback from the local community. “This project has been a game-changer for us,” said Thando Ndlovu, a resident of Lupane. “We now have a better understanding of how to identify and counter the spread of false information. The skills we’ve learned have empowered us to make more informed decisions and engage in more constructive conversations.”
Ndlovu further emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “In today’s digital age, we are constantly bombarded with information from various sources, and it’s crucial that we have the tools to discern what is true and what is not. The Sunshine Cinema project has provided us with the necessary skills to navigate this complex landscape, and we are grateful for the opportunity to participate.”

Another community member, Sipho Dube, echoed Ndlovu’s sentiments, adding, “The workshops have been eye-opening. I’ve learned to approach information with a critical eye, scrutinizing the sources and verifying the facts. This has helped me identify patterns of manipulation and avoid falling victim to the spread of misinformation. I feel more empowered to engage in meaningful discussions and contribute to a more informed and transparent society.”

As the project continues, Sunshine Cinema remains committed to promoting fact-based discourse and critical thinking, ensuring that the students and community members are well-equipped to navigate the ever-evolving information landscape.

Zibusiso Moyo, the Sunshine Cinema Ambassador, expressed her enthusiasm for the project’s impact, stating, “We are thrilled to see the positive response from the Lupane community. Our aim is to create a ripple effect, where the skills and knowledge gained through these workshops are shared and applied in various aspects of life, from personal decision-making to civic engagement.
