Stakeholders unite to safeguard Khatshana Falls

The breathtaking Khatshana Natural Falls, cascading from the Kazhana wetland stream, has captivated local stakeholders who are joining forces to protect this hidden marvel. Nestled near the historic Pupu Battlefield Monument, the falls hold immense potential to blossom into a thriving community tourism hub.
Lupane District Development Coordinator, Ennette Sithole, brimming with enthusiasm for the project, highlights the importance of collaborating with the Environment Management Agency (EMA) to ensure the wetland’s proper preservation. “The untouched beauty of Khatshana Natural Falls beckons exploration,” Sithole remarked in an exclusive interview. “We plan to involve the EMA to provide essential expertise and guidance for safeguarding the wetland. “Furthermore, we will also explore avenues for technical support, funding, and assistance with infrastructure development, visitor facilities, and marketing initiatives.”
Acknowledging the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts, Sithole emphasizes collaborative efforts between authorities, local residents, businesses, and environmental experts. “Our vision is to ensure the development of Khatshana Natural Falls aligns with the community’s aspirations and needs, while adhering to strict environmental regulations,” she added.
Local businessman, Permanent Sibanda, a key stakeholder invested in the initiative, recognizes the falls’ potential to catalyze economic growth in the region. Sibanda enthusiastically spoke about Khatshana Natural Falls’ potential, stating, “This natural wonder has the power to attract tourists from across the globe, significantly boosting the local economy. However, it’s crucial that we work together to protect and promote this exceptional site.”
Sibanda emphasizes the significance of sustainable development, saying, “Our goal is to establish a model of community-based tourism that not only fosters economic opportunities but also ensures the long-term preservation of the wetland and its ecosystem. We envision future generations cherishing and benefiting from this remarkable natural resource.”
To effectively engage the community, various initiatives are being considered. These include establishing a cooperative body comprising local residents, businesses, and environmental experts, organizing training programs to enhance tourism-related skills, and implementing eco-friendly practices to minimize environmental impact.
Sithole further underscores the importance of community participation, stating, “By involving the local population in decision-making processes and empowering them with the necessary skills and knowledge, we can cultivate a sense of ownership and responsibility towards preserving Khatshana Natural Falls and its surrounding wetland.”
As plans solidify, it becomes evident that the preservation and transformation of Khatshana Natural Falls into a community tourism destination hold immense promise for the Lupane region. With stakeholders like Ennette Sithole and Permanent Sibanda championing the cause, and the anticipated involvement of the Environment Management Agency, the project is poised to achieve a sustainable future that harmonizes economic growth and environmental conservation.
The local village head, Nkosana Moyo, raises a critical concern regarding some members of the community cultivating on the wetland, jeopardizing its water source. “Certain individuals are cultivating on the wetland, posing a risk of drying it up,” Moyo stated. “They disregard the fact that this wetland provides clean water for both our livestock and us.”
With the wetland’s magnificent falls, stakeholders in Lupane must come together to find ways to utilize the wetland responsibly to foster community tourism. Efforts to obtain comments from a local EMA official, Nomvula Moyo were unsuccessful as she declined to comment.
