Pashu Ward celebrates irrigation scheme
On July 3, 2024, the USAID-funded Amalima Loko project held a celebration event at the Sungwala irrigation scheme in Pashu Ward 14, Binga. The event’s theme was “celebrating community-led resilience capacities for improved food, water and nutrition security.”
The guest of honor, Mr. Samuel Mugande representing the District Development Coordinator’s Office (DDC) for Binga, highlighted the incredible achievements of the Tinde, Pashu, Upper Dobola, and Lower Dobola Wards through the USAID-funded Amalima Loko-inspired Community Visioning Process. “This is a momentous occasion to acknowledge how these communities have taken ownership of their development,” Mr. Mugande said in his keynote address.
As part of the Amalima Loko project, a 80-meter deep solar-powered borehole was drilled, which has helped alleviate the water crisis, especially for the women of Pashu Ward who are responsible for fetching water.
Ms. Ebby Munenge, the chairlady of the Sungwala irrigation scheme, expressed her gratitude to the USAID-funded Amalima Loko program. The irrigation system benefits 72 households, including 28 youths. The scheme includes plots for cabbages, onions, tomatoes, and butternut nuts.
Committee member Driver Muleya said the scheme has been a good for the community. “At least we can now take our children to school using money from the produce,” he said. The committee expects to earn around $7,300 from selling the cabbages, which they plan to market in Kamativi and Binga.
The Amalima Loko project, funded by USAID, has empowered the Pashu Ward community to take charge of their development and improve food, water, and nutrition security through this innovative irrigation scheme.
