Parliament Told Lupane Provincial Hospital Is Only 22.7% Complete

LUPANE — The long-awaited Matabeleland North Provincial Hospital is 22.7 percent complete, Parliament heard on August 19, as legislators pressed the government for a clear funding plan and completion timetable for the project.

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Hon. Kwidini told the National Assembly that the project’s first phase would require full resumption of works before it could be completed.

“Lupane Provincial Hospital in Matabeleland North Province is currently 22.7% complete,” Hon. Kwidini said.

“Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed within 24 months of the full resumption of works.”

Hon. Molokele-Tsiye said the continued delay left the province without a provincial hospital decades after independence.

“Forty-six years after Independence, Matabeleland North Province still does not have a provincial hospital. The province is being left behind,” he said.

Following calls for firmer commitments, the Health ministry said it would issue a ministerial statement after consulting Treasury on funding and the projected timeline for the facility.

The hospital is expected to serve a province whose residents often travel long distances for specialist and referral healthcare services.
