Matobo marathon tackles drug abuse

The annual PPC Matobo Marathon is sprinting into action with a focus beyond the finish line this year. Partnering with Active Youth Zimbabwe, the April 7th event, themed “Sure Race 2.0. #strongerbythemile,” aims to tackle the growing issue of drug abuse among the youth. The marathon starts off in the heart of Matobo National park and ends at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.
“A healthy body fosters a healthy mind,” said Nkosana Mapuma, Head of Sales and Marketing at Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC), highlighting the need for businesses and sports to collaborate. Proceeds from the marathon will directly support Active Youth Zimbabwe, enabling them to expand their drug prevention and rehabilitation efforts.
Over 5,000 participants are expected to compete across various categories, including a newly launched wheelchair division. With US$34,000 in prize money, the event promises inclusivity and impact.
Active Youth Zimbabwe welcomes the partnership. “PPC’s support will significantly enhance our capacity,” said Executive Director Romeo Matshazi. Since its 2012 inception, the organization has helped 16 individuals recover, but emphasizes the need for a dedicated rehabilitation facility.
The PPC Matobo Marathon transcends competition. It symbolizes community collaboration, promoting physical and mental well-being while addressing a critical social issue. By participating or donating, individuals can join the fight for a brighter future for Bulawayo’s youth.
