Losing candidates ordered to return cars
The ruling Zanu PF has ordered its losing party parliamentary candidates who did not make it in the just-ended harmonised elections to return the top-tier vehicles doled out to them for campaigns.
The affluent party dispensed 210 brand new vehicles that included Nissan Navaras and Ford Rangers to its parliamentary candidates for the 23 August election.
In a circular addressed to all provincial chairpersons, party Secretary General, Obert Mpofu instructed all unsuccessful candidates to return the cars by without fail by October the 4th.
“This serves as a directive to all the Zanu PF parliamentary candidates that participated and did not succeed in the just-ended harmonised elections to surrender the party vehicles that were allocated to them to the Zanu PF party headquarters by Wednesday 4 October 2023 without fail.
This is pursuant to the circular that was issued before, followed by a decision made by the party leadership at the Politburo meeting held on 28 September 2023,” said Mpofu.
He directed provincial chairpersons to ensure compliance to the command.
In 2018, the party let its losing candidates keep the cars and it is not immediately clear why the party has decided to repossess the vehicles.
Unlike its opponents that operate with shoe-string or zero budgets, Zanu PF, arguably, the only financially sound party in Zimbabwe, ran a campaign that ran into millions of United States Dollars.
