Farmers urged to safeguard livestock during the rainy season

As the rainy season sets in, farmers in Lupane are being urged to take extra precautions to protect their livestock from a surge of diseases.

With the potential for illness high, experts emphasize the importance of diligent care to ensure the health of cattle and goats.

Sukoluhle Mpofu, an Animal Health Specialist, highlighted the risks associated with the wet season.

“During this time, cattle and goats are particularly vulnerable to various diseases, including January Disease (JD), which is tick-borne, and Footrot, which can arise from muddy conditions in the pens,” she warned, further raising that special care must be applied to maintain livestock health.

”Dipping, a critical practice during this period, is essential due to the proliferation of ticks. Ticks multiply much during the rainy season, making regular dipping paramount,” Mpofu stressed.

Her message resonates deeply among local farmers who are keen on protecting their investments.

Sindiso Ncube, a private cattle dealer, echoed Mpofu’s concerns while noting some positive developments.

“Cattle are currently in good shape after surviving the wean dry season, which was a result of the El Niño-induced drought of the 2023-24 season,” he said. However, he cautioned, “Farmers should not let their guard down; dipping and vaccinating their animals is crucial for ensuring their good health.”

Nomazulu Mthembo, a lead farmer in Mzola ward, reinforced the call to action.

“We must take good care of our livestock during this rainy season, as they can easily succumb to different diseases if not properly managed,” she asserted.

As the rains bring much-needed relief, the potential for livestock diseases poses a significant threat. Farmers are urged to heed the advice of experts and prioritize the health of their animals to ensure a prosperous season ahead.
