Villagers cry out for dam at Silibinda Vlei

Residents of Nemananga Ward in Jambezi are urging local authorities to construct a dam at Silibinda vlei, a seasonal water source that dries up during winter, causing hardship for both livestock and agriculture.

The issue came to light during a village meeting held last Wednesday at Headman Simon Chabwa’s homestead. Residents expressed their concerns about the annual loss of livestock due to water scarcity.
“We lose too many cattle every year because of thirst,” said Marko Shoko from Zwigamba village. “There’s only one reliable borehole, but it simply can’t support all the villages watering their animals. Silibinda vlei would be the perfect location for a dam that could truly help us. Right now, the vlei holds water, but only until winter hits. With proper construction, we could have water year-round.”

Angela Sibanda, a renowned farmer in Sibilinda Village, emphasized the dam’s potential to improve food security. “If we had a permanent water storage facility, we could significantly improve food security in Jambezi,” she stated. “We’d be able to engage in horticulture and irrigation activities. If the vlei is properly developed, everyone’s livelihoods would benefit. We’ve been talking about this for years, but nothing has been done. Hopefully, this time will be different.”

Village head, Godfrey Ndlovu echoed the residents’ sentiments. “They’re absolutely right,” he said. “For as long as I can remember, the idea of turning the vlei into a permanent dam has been discussed, but with little success. We urge Headman Chabwa to take our concerns further and push for progress on this project. I will also raise the issue with the chief during our next meeting. “Headman Chabwa acknowledged the water shortage faced by livestock in the area and vowed to do everything in his power to get the dam built. “I will discuss this with my superiors,” he declared. “Even if constructing a dam isn’t feasible, at least de-silting the vlei would be a big help. Currently, there’s water in that depression, but it dries up quickly due to the heat and lack of proper management. The location is ideal for irrigation if done right. Rest assured, the District Administrator will be informed of this issue soon.”The headman also highlighted the potential for other dams in Jambezi. “There are many places in Jambezi that could be developed into dams to capture rainwater, ultimately improving the lives of residents,” he concluded.

Councillor for Nemananga Ward, Kayanda Kapanda, who was present at the meeting, offered a glimmer of hope. “Justice will be served for Silibinda vlei in the near future,” he asserted. “This is part of my plan as councillor, and I will present it to the Hwange Rural District Council for a possible feasibility study. Before my term ends, something will happen at Silibinda vlei. I will fight tirelessly to ensure that the villagers get the dam they need to improve their social and economic wellbeing. With abundant water, many things become possible.

The residents of Nemananga Ward wait with cautious optimism, hoping that their pleas for a dam at Silibinda vlei will finally be heard.
