Covid-19 new cases and deaths soar

As expected after the weekend decline, Covid-19 new cases and deaths shot up countrywide on Monday as 2 113 people tested positive while 75 deaths were recorded bringing the total number of deaths due to the novel respiratory disease to 2 697.

Mashonaland East recorded the highest number of new infections at 330. Harare had 252 new infections while Mashonaland West, which has been topping the category in recent days recorded 250.

Mashonaland Central had 239 new infections. New cases in Matabeleland North rose to 214. Bulawayo recorded 200 new infections, Masvingo 184, Manicaland 175 and Midlands 140.

Matabeleland South kept its position at the foot of the new infections table with 129 new infections. However, the figure represents an increment when juxtaposed with the past two days.

4 056 people received 1st dose, bringing cumulative to 1 184 435. 2049  received their second jab, raising 2nd dose cumulative to 643 203.

As at 19 July 2021, Zimbabwe had 85 732 confirmed cases, including 55 714 recoveries and 2 697 deaths. To date, a total of 1 184 435 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the Government has instructed all line ministries, with the exception of the Ministry of Health and Childcare to further reduce staff members who report for duty from 40% to 10% with immediate effect.
