Binga youths celebrate graduation from vocational training program

Youths in Binga recently celebrated their graduation from a vocational training program, a joint initiative by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development, and Vocational Training, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The 10-day training program, held in Sianzyundu Ward 9 from September 16 to 27, 2024, covered various fields including cosmetology, building, plumbing, motor mechanics, solar technology, welding, dressmaking, and carpentry. It aimed to empower youths in Binga by promoting self-employment and reducing issues related to drug and substance abuse.
The graduation ceremony, held on the 18th of January 2025, was attended by officials from various departments, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Honorable Chineka Muchimba, Member of Parliament for Binga North constituency, expressed his happiness during the ceremony and urged the youths to utilize their certificates in searching for jobs.
“These certificates are your keys to unlocking opportunities; use them to secure jobs in various disciplines,” he said.
Muchimba also noted that the training program aligns with the national mantra of leaving no place or person behind in terms of development.
Mr. Cryton Mudimba, Cluster Coordinator for the program, expressed gratitude for the skills training program. He emphasized that the training has equipped youths with necessary skills to secure jobs within and outside Binga District.
Mudimba highlighted the program’s impact, citing examples of youths who have already started generating income through skills acquired during the training, such as plaiting hair and selling African attire. However, Mudimba also acknowledged that some youths, particularly females in the dressmaking business, may face challenges in acquiring the necessary equipment and resources to start their own businesses.
Felix Sikapepele and Thinkwell Milazi, two students who received plumbing training, praised the program for empowering them to earn a living.
Sikapepele noted that the training fulfilled his dreams, enabling him to secure contracts and apply his skills at work. Milazi, from Saba ward, expressed gratitude for gaining the ability to support herself through plumbing. She encouraged fellow women to pursue similar training, emphasizing the importance of vocational education in promoting self-sufficiency and contributing to the local economy. Both trainees hope their success stories inspire other young people to acquire trade skills.
A sergeant from the Zimbabwe Republic Police urged youths to desist from drug and substance abuse, emphasizing the importance of healthy living.
“As you celebrate your graduation today, I advise you to avoid life-threatening substances and focus on activities that promote prosperity and well-being,” he said.
Ms. Munzi Gabbuza from Amalima Loko thanked the capacity training program for empowering youths. She emphasized the importance of education in bringing sustainability and transforming communities.
“Let’s encourage our youths in Binga to join these skills courses, which can help change lives and transform our district,” she said.
The graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone for the youths, who celebrated receiving their certificates. The program has become an eye-opener for many youths in Binga District, demonstrating the potential for skills training to drive positive change and empowerment.
