Bajila raises concern over escalating housebreaking cases

Emakhandeni-Luveve Constituency lawmaker, Discent Bajila, has implored the government to create job opportunities to address the escalating housebreaking cases in his area and Bulawayo as a whole.
According to Community Podium’s investigations, nearly every day, at least one household reports a housebreaking incident or attempted theft in Bajila’s jurisdiction. In an exclusive interview, the legislator expressed concern over the rising crime rate, attributing it to high unemployment and drug abuse among the youth.
“The increasing crime in our communities is largely linked to youth unemployment and rising drug addiction,” Bajila said. “Drug addiction leads to a constant need for money to sustain the habit, which drives individuals to commit criminal activities.”
Bajila emphasized the need for government intervention in creating employment opportunities and combating drug trafficking and illicit drug sales. He also called on the police to conduct regular patrols in Gwabalanda, a new residential area experiencing high crime rates.
He encouraged residents to form neighborhood watch groups to enhance security. “Police should increase their presence in Gwabalanda, particularly at night,” Bajila said. “Additionally, given the ongoing construction of Luveve North near the area, we anticipate more challenges. Establishing a capacitated neighborhood watch and increasing police presence will be crucial in addressing these issues.”
Bajila’s call for job creation and addressing drug abuse highlights the complex root causes of crime in Bulawayo. The government’s response to these issues will be crucial in ensuring the safety and security of residents.
