Anti-Constitutional Amendments trio back in court.
WELEAD leader, Namatai Kwekweza, 21 will be back in court on the 16th of September 2020, alongside Youngerson Matete, 29 and Prince Gora, 24.
The youthful trio is charged with contravening section 37(1)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act after they allegedly protested against the Constitutional Amendments at Parliament Building in Harare.
Kwekweza has been amplifying young people’s voices which are diametrically opposed to changing the constitution. The youths assert that the constitution should be implemented rather than amended.
Furthermore, they contend that the majority of participants in the public meetings rejected the proposed alterations to the constitution and parliament has disregarded theses voices and proceed with the process.
The government on the other hand is bent on pressing ahead with the amendments. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi shot down the outcome of the public hearings, maintaining that the public was coached by the opposition and civil society to oppose the amendments. Even without reasonable premise and evidence to substantiate this claim of participants in public hearings being coached, the government is proceeding with the proposed amendments and using the judiciary systems to deter the efforts of young people who are at the lead in resisting the Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 2.
It is remarkable that youth voices are at the center of crucial national issues and that young woman are also taking leadership roles in civic engagement and the struggle for constitutionalism in Zimbabwe.
