Jambezi community champions inclusivity of PWDs

Hwange, Zimbabwe – The Jambezi community is setting a shining example of inclusivity by actively embracing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This progressive shift is evident in various aspects of community life, from land ownership and leadership roles to equal employment opportunities.
Councillor Africa Ncube of Chikandakubi Ward highlighted the community’s commitment to treating PWDs with dignity and respect.
“When allocating resources like food aid or agricultural land, we ensure that PWDs are considered equally,” he said. “One of our village heads lives with a disability and is actively involved in community projects,” he further mentioned, demonstrating that discrimination based on disability is unacceptable.
Residents like Chifita Sibanda from Mazhanga Village echoed this sentiment. “We work alongside PWDs in community programs and offer them employment opportunities,” she explained. “They excel in various tasks, from repairing fences to participating in food-for-work programs. Their contributions are invaluable.”
Martin ‘X’ Mpala, Chairperson of PWDs in Nemananga Ward, expressed gratitude for the community’s growing acceptance. “Gone are the days of discrimination and stigma,” he said. “We are now benefiting from equal access to resources, including land allocation and job opportunities. Additionally, schools are integrating children with disabilities into mainstream education, further promoting inclusivity.”
Reverend Travena Chichoni, Director of Arise and Shine for Community Development (ASCoD), an organisation that deals with counselling and helping vulnerable people in Hwange District, praised the efforts of the Jambezi community. “The district is embracing PWDs, and I’ve witnessed firsthand their involvement in various initiatives, such as permaculture gardening,” she said. “This aligns with the constitutional mandate to recognize and uphold the rights of PWDs.”
By actively involving Persons with Disabilities in community life, the Jambezi community is not only fulfilling its constitutional obligations but also building a more equitable and compassionate society.
