Experts champion intergenerational approach to development

For years, development discourses have struggled to capture the attention of young people, who are often disengaged from conversations about social, economic, and political progress. This trend has raised concerns among experts, who recognize the importance of involving the next generation in shaping the future.
According to a recent survey conducted by the African Youth Development Forum (AYDF), only 15% of young people aged 18-25 participate in development-related discussions, citing lack of interest and relevance as primary reasons. This disconnect has significant implications, as young people comprise over 50% of the population in many developing countries. This has compelled development experts to call for an intergenerational approach to information dissemination, recognizing the importance of involving young people in the development conversation.
Dr. Wayne Malinga, a senior lecturer at Lupane State University’s Development Studies department, emphasized this call during a stakeholder engagement that took place at Methodist church in Bulawayo hosted by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches where he said holistic development requires inclusivity through correct channels of communication targeting different age groups.
“This approach values diverse experiences and expertise, fostering mutual learning and respect,” Dr. Malinga explained. “By bridging the age gap, stakeholders can leverage young people’s creativity and innovation, while tapping into older generations’ wisdom and experience.”
Dr. Tobias Guzura from Zimbabwe Open University took to the Podium to add that , “By engaging multiple generations, we can create a more inclusive and sustainable development trajectory.”
The Zimbabwe Council of Churches’ initiative demonstrates the power of collaborative effort in driving meaningful change. By embracing intergenerational targeting, stakeholders can ensure that development initiatives resonate with all segments of society.
Dr. Malinga noted that development can be achieved by targeting all stakeholders using their preferred platforms. “Together, we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous future for all where every voice is heard, and every generation contributes.”
