Borehole drilling initiative launched to tackle Byo’s water crisis

In an effort to address Bulawayo’s worsening water crisis, the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development (LAFWRD) has launched a proactive initiative to enhance borehole drilling throughout the city. This strategic move responds to the acute water shortages that residents are facing, prompting swift action from government authorities.
This initiative was unveiled by the Minister of LAFWRD, Anxious Masuka, during a meeting at the Mhlahlandlela Government Complex in Bulawayo. Minister Masuka announced plans to intensify borehole drilling efforts in the city.
” There are 83 potential drilling sites that have been identified in the city, with 22 locations already undergoing rigorous assessments to determine their suitability. 15 viable sites have been identified for immediate borehole installation. This is treated with urgency of as we assured the public of accelerated assessment and drilling processes.”
Minister of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan province, Judith Ncube, urged support in settling debts owed to the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to aid in addressing water and sanitation challenges.
“As Bulawayo we continue to ask for your assistance in engaging other line ministries and treasury in clearing the debt owed to BCC. The revenue could go a long way in tackling water and sanitation challenges and support projects. Whislt Glassblock dam is envisaged as a medium term solution to easing the water problems, completion of the Gwai- Shangani dam and the ancillary works continues to be the city’s ultimate hope”.
Mayor David Coltart expressed satisfaction with the proactive steps being taken to alleviate the water crisis in Bulawayo.
A specialized technical committee has been established to assess Bulawayo’s water resources and capacity to withstand potential shortages. The committee aims to provide strategic recommendations within a 100-day timeline to ensure the city’s water sustainability.
BCC declared Bulawayo a water crisis zone, prompting collaborative intervention. The ministry’s borehole drilling initiative aligns with this declaration, reflecting a coordinated effort to combat ongoing water scarcity in the city.
