CCC MPs’ 2 month’s salary seized
Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda on yesterday ruled that he will deduct two months’ salary from opposition Citizen Coalition for Change MPs and also barred them from attending the next six sessions of parliament after they protested against the recall of 15 of their members.
CCC Chief whip, Amos Chibaya described Mudenda’s ruling as unlawful. The opposition has approached the High Court challenging Sengezo Tshabangu’s recall of 15 MPs and 12 senators on allegations that they ceased to be members of the CCC.
“According to the Standing Rules, the speaker must set up a privileges committee which should then compile a report for the house to debate before a decision is reached. This is unconstitutional. But it must be known that we are not after money or benefits, but we are here to serve our people,” said Chibaya.
Mudenda summoned riot police from Harare Police Station to eject all CCC MPs who were heckling him and chanting “11 September,” in reference to the date Nelson Chamisa is said to have written to Mudenda advising the Speaker that all correspondence regarding CCC MPs would come from Chamisa’s office.
The riot police officers, armed with tear smoke and whips, forcibly ejected the opposition MPs after they had refused to leave the building.
