Hwange District triumphs

Victoria Falls- Hwange District won this year’s National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) athletics competition which came to an end at Mosi-oa-Tunya High School yesterday.
The competition was used to select a provincial team for national competitions to be held in Marondera end of March.
Hosts, Hwange District amassed 22 gold, 18 bronze and 17 silver medals to pip formidable rivals, Binga by one gold medal.
Tsholotsho anchored the seven districts table having collected a paltry eight gold medals in the two days competition which attracted a huge following in the resort city.
Provincial Education Director for Matabeleland North Mr Jabulani Mpofu who was the guest of honour, thanked the district teams for showing commitment in the training of learners despite the recent embagoe on sports due to COVID-19. He hailed the Hwange team for the success.
” Schools are doing a splendid job despite being idle for 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Look at how Mosi-oa-Tunya High has spruced up their stadium. Next year we want this stadium to be the best in the South of the Sahara,” said Mpofu before warning learners to desit from drug abuse.
“Avoid drugs. Drugs have destroyed our nation. I plead with you children to desist from drugs as these substances have severe side effects. I am happy that I never received any report of drug abuse amongst you learners since the games started, ” said the veteran educationist.
A strong 85 member squad to represent Matabeleland North province was selected to compete in the National competitions in Marondera on 22 and 23 March at Peterhouse. The Head In Charge for athletics, Langelihle Maipisi of Nkayi High School said the team will use Gloag High School for training before proceeding to the finals.
The Matabeleland North athletics team is a perennial anchor of the National games but this time around the team is oozing with confidence to turn the tables.
Mosi-oa- Tunya headmaster, Mr Roland Sibanda implored team Matabeleland North to go for the coveted prize.
“I wish the team the best in Marondera. We are perennially number 10 in national competitions, this time we hope to make it to the Confederation of Schools Sports Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA).
NASH had suspended all sporting activities country- wide in tandem with with COVID-19 guidelines to protect learners and teachers from the dreaded pandemic. This year, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education lifted the suspension marking the resumption of sports in schools.
