ZUPCO hikes prices again
The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has hiked the local bus fare again. This is apparently the fourth fare increase this year, with a 100% fare hike effective today.
In a memo addressed to all conductors Belvedere Depot Manager F. Muchena said “Please note that all local buses and commuter omnibus fares have increased from September 5 2020,” The new prices for local routes which were charged ZWL$8 will now be going for ZWL$16, those which were charged ZWL$12 will now be going for ZWL$24 and those which were charged ZWL$16 will now be going for ZWL$32.
A Bulawayo resident, Thando Hamtjilani said, I boarded a ZUPCO bus from Nkulumane to the city centre at ZWL$16 instead of the usual ZWL $8.
Tafadzwa Goliati, President of the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) said, we are not happy with this development. Passengers’ salaries remain stagnant while prices of many essential services and basic commodities keep going up.
“This is a big blow to passengers who are already struggling to make ends meet. Why is fuel price going up quizzed Goliati? The fuel price usually makes prices of everything to go up” he added.
Earlier this week, Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) announced its reviewed fuel prices effective 5th September 2020 as follows: Diesel 50 at ZWL 86 or US$1.04 per litre and petrol at ZWL$97.93 or USD$1.18 per litre.
