30 people die in road accidents during Easter

30 people died and 153 were injured in accidents across the country during the just-ended Easter holiday, police have said.
Details around the tragedies were communicated to the public by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday.
According to Asst. Commissioner Nyathi there were 16 fatal road accidents.
‘Most fatal road accidents accidents recorded occured during the night where travellers were moving in numbers with vehicles overloaded, mixing goods with passangers in the process ignoring safety measures,” he said.
The first day of the holiday recorded the highest numbers of both fatalities and injuries as there were 10 people who perished and 31 injured in a Toyota-kombi omnibus collision at
the 192 kilometre peg along Harare- Masvingo highway.
“On 9 April at 23:00 hours at five kilometre peg along Mvuma-Gweru road, six people died while five others were injured when a Mercedes-Benz sprinter with 24 passangers on board side swiped with a UD truck carrying 31 passangers. The truck driver did not stop after the accident and was involved in another accident at the 192 kilometre peg along Masvingo- Harare where the truck veered off the road resulting in the injury of three passangers who were at the back.”
Two more people died at the 213 kilometre peg along Harare- Masvingo road on the same day when a Honda Fit vehicle with four passangers veered off the road and landed beneath a bridge.
Asst. Commissioner Nyathi encouraged motorists to be more responsible on the road in the upcoming Independence holiday and avoid making roads death traps and oblige to regulations to ensure safety.
The number of deaths from road accidents declined from the same period in 2022 when 73 people died in 264 road accidents.
Easter holiday started on Thursday the 7th and ended on Sunday the 10th of April.
