A shocking land scandal has erupted in Matabeleland North province, with 155 arrests made in a major crackdown on illegal land occupation. The operation, launched just over a month ago, exposed a web of corruption involving political leaders, traditional chiefs, and even government employees, accused of illegally parcelling out land for personal gain.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Richard Moyo, revealed the startling figures at a press conference, emphasizing that “no one is above the law,” not even those in positions of authority. His statement comes amidst public outcry over land barons – individuals who exploit loopholes to acquire and sell land illegally – and their suspected collusion with influential figures.

The arrests span both perpetrators and victims, with 75 land barons facing legal consequences for their illicit activities. 80 individuals, caught occupying land illegally, are also part of the crackdown. Minister Moyo stressed that “the Ministry of Lands does not delegate land allocation to anyone,” highlighting the official channels that must be followed for legitimate land acquisition.

This operation signalled a significant shift in the government’s approach to land management. The “Restore Order in Agricultural Land“ project aims to curb the illegal purchase of land by land barons and ensure fair and transparent allocation processes. Minister Moyo urged those seeking land to approach the Department of Land Management and Administration or local authorities through proper channels.

The impact of this crackdown goes beyond mere numbers. It exposes a deep-seated issue of corruption and abuse of power, shaking public trust in institutions and highlighting the plight of ordinary citizens struggling to access land legally.
